I think someone has been watching too much Thunderdome. But what the heck, let's get out the chainsaws and giant mallets and have some entertainment.

defd, three sincere questions
by OldSoul indefd,.
on page 146 of what does the bible really teach?, the opening sentence of paragraph 6 purports to represent one of the six criteria for determining the true religion.
it reads: "god's servants base their teachings on the bible.".

Derrick is no different than many people that subscribe to any religion (as most here feel that all religions are a load of crap), most know if they are honest their faith has issues, questions that can't be answered well, etc. but they get what they need out of it and are happy. Nothing wrong with that I say, unless it is causing them some personal pain or causing them to hurt someone else.
I had go arounds with my wife when we first met as she was/is Catholic, and though I left the borg I by training I thought the Catholic church was just the worst. So I would get into discussions with her attacking some of the Catholic beliefs as I was taught growing up in the hall until one day she told me in no uncertain terms that she was happy with being a Catholic, she realized the church had problems but she was okay with them and would appreciate if I would shut the hell up unless I had something better to offer her, which some would say being agnostic or atheist is "better" but I really don't so I shut the hell up.
I think its great to discuss beliefs and doctrine, but at the end of the day if it makes sense to you then go with it.

For DEFD, discussing my "bad" avatar
by wanderlustguy inok, defd brings up a point that has been mentioned to me for a second time now, so i ask the question, should i change my avatar?.
when i first came here, and figured out how much i was really lied to, it was as simple as a guy flipping off the society.. .
to those who don't know, it is johnny cash.

WLG, love the avatar, don't change it unless you want to. There is enough censorship, a little free expression is a good thing.

JW kids and the national anthem humiliation......
by kid-A infor me, school was extremely stressful as a jw kid.
the worst part had to be my morning dose of humiliation being forced to walk out of the room as the national anthem came on the loudspeakers (first god save the queen, then, oh canada).
the other kids found this completely bizarre, and several of my "patriotic" minded teachers really resented me for doing this (despite the obvious fact i had no choice in the matter but was being forced into this by my parents).. how could anybody force this public humiliation on a small child or teen-ager, already having to deal with the normal stresses of growing up and worrying about their public image with their peers???

Don't even get me started on this crap. God I hate the WBTS and the GB for warping my childhood. Where is 144001, he comes up with the coolest things to do to the GB, like giving them a 1000 paper cuts then dipping them in a vat of lemon juice, or drowning them in a tub of vomit. Nothing would be too loathesome for what those freaks did to my childhood.

Ever wonder why...........
by knot4me injw's never get dfed for being fat?
please don't take this offensively if you are overweight, i'm a little chubby myself.
i'm not judging.
-
Big Dog
Forget gluttony, what about treating your body as a temple blah, blah, blah, being grossly overweight is as harmful if not more harmful to your body than smoking, heavy drinking, etc. I mean that's the reason they give for no smoking right, disrespect for your body, well being morbidly obese would fit that category don't you think?

Arranged marriages - What do you think??
by Tez inpersonally i don't condemn this outright, but feel the couple should have input if it is to succeed.
any thoughts anyone??
?

I think arranged marriages rank just behind ritual human sacrifice in terms of social utility.

Being raised a witness has it's benefits...
by Princess ini actually have several reasons why i don't resent my witness upbringing, but it sure came in handy today.. last year i posted about helping 50 kids run in the seattle kids marathon at my daughter's school.
the event was a blast and while it was a ton of work, seeing the joy on the kids' faces when they crossed the finish line made it all worth it.. this morning i spoke to the entire student body at my daughter's school at their monthly spirit assembly.
if i hadn't been raised a witness, giving talks from the time i was five, i never would have attempted such a thing.

Yeah, I suppose someone in the Hitler youth movement learned some good things too, how to be physically fit, grooming, basic survival skills, yeah, growing up in the Nazi youth movement probably wasn't all bad either.
Nothing learned as a JW couldn't have been learned somewhere else without all the crap that went along with it.

Worse Case Scenario Mentality
by tall penguin ini'm finding this to be a difficult pattern of thinking to over-ride.
being raised a jw we're always on edge waiting for armageddon and so we see everything around us in light of that.
i still find myself going down that road mentally whenever i get any unexpected news in life.

I did this for probably 3 or 4 years after I got out (was raised JW, left at 18 without being baptised) until I was finally able to deprogram myself from the knee jerk panic reaction. I did it by realizing that bad stuff has been happening for a long time and the lastest round of crap was no different.
